Virtual senator 'no ring-in'

GREENS senator Bob Brown went to great lengths to prove yesterday that a taxpayer-funded study trip had not interfered with his devotion to duty.

Senator Brown was an invisible but vocal participant in a Senate committee hearing into the Bali bombings.

He was in Washington DC on a trip partly funded by the taxpayer but was not going to let thousands of miles and a 14-hour time difference stop him having his say.

Late at night in the US capital, Senator Brown logged on and joined his committee colleagues virtually, if not physically.

He remained online for almost six hours and - true to... (read more)

Corporate Scumbag: Aldi’s anti-union empire
Nick Markin

Most shoppers probably know two things about Aldi supermarkets — they are from Germany and they promise “everyday low prices”. Few people have any idea of the secretive anti-union empire that lurks behind the Aldi name.

From running their mother’s corner shop at the end of World War II, brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht today command the Aldi empire with a US$50 billion turnover and more than 6500 stores worldwide.

The Aldi chain began in 1960, then was split the next year into Karl’s Aldi Sud, covering the southern half of Germany, and the younger Theo’s Aldi Nord in the north.

Then they moved on to divvy up the world market. While over half the 6500 Aldi stores are in Germany, they can also be found in 13 countries across Europe, the USA and Australia. China is now in their sights.

Karl Albrecht is worth a staggering US $23 billion, making him one the world’s top five richest people. Theo Albrecht is only worth around US $3 billion.

Aldi plays its cards very close to its chest. Aldi stores are controlled by a secretive..... (read more)

GERMAN discount supermarket chain Aldi will make its long-awaited debut in southeast Queensland next month in a move almost certain to heat up a price war with market leaders Coles and Woolworths.

Aldi plans to open no-frills stores at Salisbury,on Brisbane's south side, and Chermside, on the north side, June 24, and two more at Labrador and Kingston a week later.

Three more – at North Lakes, Burpengary and Oxley – will be unveiled by late July, with a total of 12 expected to be in operation by the end of the year, according to Queensland managing director Viktor Jakupec.
The expansion is part of Aldi's $1.2 billion push on Australia's eastern seaboard which started in Sydney in early 2001 and moved into Melbourne last year. The fast-growing chain now has 66 stores in southern states, with the national number tipped to reach about 100 by December.

The drive into Queensland is centred on a new... (read more)

Knocking on Hitler's door
May 29, 2004

The world remembers the day the liberation of Europe began, Peter Fray reports from Normandy.

The first Allied soldier that French teenager Gerard Denis saw was a Canadian parachutist who hit the ground like a dead weight in the field next door.

His chute had not opened and, in a few terrifying, frantic moments, his liberation of Europe had ended - as did that of thousands of other invading troops - before it had really started. Scared witless, Gerard, then an 18-year-old student, sneaked out with a friend and buried him - and waited.

It was June 6, 1944, a day etched in Mr Denis's diary in flowing blue ink copperplate.

The normally cool German officers who had occupied the Denis family home were agitated and "behaving differently". Soon they would be.... (read more)

AUSTRALIAN tourists are being warned they may be deported from the United States for minor passport or visa breaches – and it could prove expensive.

Foreign Affairs officials have warned US-bound tourists to check all paperwork and admit to any past visa breaches or convictions before trying to enter America.

The advice follows a growing number of incidents where Australians – and other nationals – have been refused entry for "red tape" reasons and then almost immediately put on a return flight.

Brisbane tiler Marc Lang, 36, told... (read more)

Disney Forbidding Distribution of Film That Criticizes Bush
By JIM RUTENBERG

WASHINGTON, May 4 — The Walt Disney Company is blocking its Miramax division from distributing a new documentary by Michael Moore that harshly criticizes President Bush, executives at both Disney and Miramax said Tuesday.

The film, "Fahrenheit 911," links Mr. Bush and prominent Saudis — including the family of Osama bin Laden — and criticizes Mr. Bush's actions before and after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Disney, which bought Miramax more than a decade ago, has a contractual agreement with the Miramax principals, Bob and Harvey Weinstein, allowing it to prevent the company from distributing films under certain circumstances, like an excessive budget or an NC-17 rating.

Executives at Miramax, who became principal investors in Mr. Moore's project last..... (read moore) ;-)
